The Inclusive Coast

Planning a holiday or break with us at Breakaway Retreats, Sunshine Coast?

Did you know there is a variety of activities right here on the Sunshine Coast that you can participate in, regardless of your abilities?

We’ve done the research for you and you’re sure to find an activity or two to keep you entertained when you stay with us on the Sunshine Coast.

Let’s dive right in and check them out!

Let’s Go Surfing

The Sunshine Coast is home to a branch of the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia. The Association has been operating almost a decade on the Sunshine Coast and the surfers can enjoy warm water and blue skies.

The Disabled Surfers Association was established in 1986 by Gary Blaschke after a motorcycle accident in which he lost his knee cap and underwent extensive rehabilitation. Gary is a passionate surfer and he wanted to offer those less abled the opportunity to enjoy surfing as much as he did. Gary understands that many suffer from disabilities that the general public would not consider a disability; from asthmatics to joint injuries to paraplegic, many members have found friendship, support and have renewed their interest in surfing.

Hit the beach

Whilst the beach has often been tricky for people in wheelchairs to navigate and enjoy, we are lucky on the Sunshine Coast to have several locations where everyone can enjoy the sand and the surf with wheelchair access and beach wheelchairs thanks to the local councils.

Accessible matting, which makes it easier for people with disabilities, parents with prams and seniors to navigate to the firm sand, is now provided at Kings, Coolum and Mooloolaba beaches.

Beach wheelchairs are also available at all three locations.

Ride em cowboy or girl!

Horse riding can be an inclusive activity for everyone to enjoy! The Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation providing equine-based therapeutic and recreational riding programs for all members of the disability community on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

At the Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled, they have a dedicated team of volunteers who assist with their programs to allow the participants to enjoy their activities in a safe and controlled manner.

Along with the volunteers, there is also a team of hard-working horses who are specially selected and trained to allow the participants to enjoy and develop their skills in a safe environment. Many of these horses are specifically trained and assessed for particular roles to allow them to provide the unique services of the programs.
